Over the past weeks, Matthijs Rosman (Partner, RevelX) and Arno Knobbe (Professor of Data Science at Leiden University and Co-founder of Data Science Agency) delivered two workshops hosted at the KNVB Foortball Innovation Hub #11 for Sportinnovator on what AI can really mean for sport not as a buzzword, but as a practical driver of performance and innovation.
We explored the full AI landscape: from classic machine learning for pattern recognition in training data and performance forecasting, to deep learning applied to video and sensor analysis, enabling automated tracking, tactical assessment, and biomechanical insights. We discussed knowledge graphs to connect athletes, training loads, injuries, environmental conditions, and competitive outcomes into meaningful context, and large language models to translate complex data into accessible explanations for coaches, analysts, and athletes themselves. We also demonstrated the power of generative AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation, including real-world examples such as an AI nutritional coach for elite sports that delivers 24/7 personalized guidance based on curated expert knowledge and athlete-specific data rather than generic online sources.
Beyond the technology itself, the focus was firmly on application. We distinguished between using AI to improve existing workflows making current training, planning, and analysis processes faster, more scalable, and more consistent and deploying AI-native interventions that fundamentally reshape how athletes are coached and supported. Use cases ranged from automated workload and travel planning to real-time coaching assistants and virtual experts that help extend elite-level support to far larger athlete groups.
Ethics and athlete welfare formed a central thread throughout both sessions. Topics included data minimization, privacy protection, transparency toward athletes and staff, fairness and bias in models, and the non-negotiable principle of keeping the human in the loop. AI should enhance professional judgment, not replace it. Any application must demonstrably contribute to both performance and well-being, remain explainable, and operate within clear governance frameworks.
The key conclusion was straightforward: AI can refine performance, scale expert capacity, and unlock new forms of sporting intervention, provided organizations start small with focused pilots, define clear success criteria, invest in data quality and governance, and keep the athlete and coach firmly at the center of every solution.
Our thanks go to the participating Sportinnovator Centres for the sharp discussions and inspiring ideas, and to the KNVB Football Innovation Hub #11 for the warm hospitality and highly motivating setting.
